Bentonite

Bentonite is a type of clay that is composed primarily of the mineral montmorillonite, which belongs to the smectite group of clay minerals. Bentonite has many industrial and commercial uses, such as drilling mud, waterproofing, animal feed, cosmetics etc.
It can absorb large amounts of water and swell up to several times its original volume. Bentonite is formed by the alteration of volcanic ash in seawater or by hydrothermal circulation.
